Language coaching

Negotiating successfully with customers in German – a possible goal for language coaching.

Language coaching is tailored to the personal goals and individual prior knowledge of a language learner and consists of three steps:

-analysing the initial situation

-learning counselling

-language work

The first step involves taking a look at the language learner’s previous learning path, their linguistic resources, their learning methods and the situations in their everyday working life in which they communicate in German. The goals that the language learner would like to achieve with the help of language coaching are also defined.

This is followed by learning counselling, in which the language learner is taught methods for self-learning and existing resources for language acquisition are activated.

The language work involves simulating specific everyday professional situations that the language learner would like to improve their language skills to cope with.

An example of language coaching

The language coaching programme for an employee of an association in Stuttgart lasted around 3 months. At the end of his language coaching, I asked him for feedback. His feedback describes very well how I support my clients in achieving their professional goals.

Positive feedback

Initial situation

I have been living in Germany for almost seven years and am employed by an association. My German language skills are already well developed in oral and listening comprehension. My primary learning goal was to improve my written and oral expression skills in a professional context.

Procedure of the language coaching

An online appointment was arranged before the start of the course. The purpose of this meeting was to get to know each other and establish an initial basis of trust. After this meeting, I was able to decide whether I wanted to start the language coaching with Rolf.

At the beginning of the collaboration, Rolf analysed our association’s website. The aim of this analysis was to identify and evaluate frequently used verbs, relevant grammatical structures and industry-specific technical vocabulary.

Based on this initial analysis, Rolf created a customised learning concept and prepared corresponding learning materials.

Procedure of the classroom sessions

The oral language production exercises in the form of speeches, presentations and topic-related conversations were a central part of the language coaching and an important basis for my individual work.

The feedback after the oral language production exercises always showed me specific areas for improvement, which helped me to work specifically on my weaknesses. The personalised approach helped me in particular to further develop my speaking skills.

After the lectures, presentations and discussions, the practice sessions continued with a grammar section and subsequent grammar exercises or targeted vocabulary work.

Results

I now articulate myself more precisely in German and have developed increased self-confidence in my linguistic expression. Thanks to the numerous and targeted exercises, I was able to significantly improve my grammar skills and expand my vocabulary. Furthermore, I have established the positive habit of continuously learning German and thus consolidating my language skills in the long term.

To summarise, it can be said that the language coaching fully met my expectations and the learning goals I had set myself were achieved.
